Photo Gallery - Print Catalog

All prints are produced by the photographer himself using his own state-of-the-art Giclée process. The inks are an archival set designed to be light-fast for centuries. The 8-ink set reproduces a huge color gamut compared to traditional 4-color processes and the ultra-precise pressurized print system controls droplets less than 4 trillionths of a liter to create a raster of more than 4,000,000 points per square inch.

When combined with High Dynamic Range and Ultra High Resolution images, the capabilities of Photoshop CS5 Extended and Photoshop Lightroom 3, and custom imaging software developed by Geoff, the result is a vast, rich, and nuanced image.

Media are matched to the image and include traditional satin finish and exhibition fiber photo papers as well as canvases. All are archival, as are the acid-free mat board, linen mounting tape and other materials.

Larger prints (18"+ on the shorter side) and prints on canvas are produced from roll stock* and cut to length at the appropriate aspect ratio.

Old Skiff at Quansoo, WinterOld Skiff at Quansoo, Winter

1: "Old Skiff at Quansoo - Winter" Quansoo (Chilmark) Tisbury Great Pond at Crab Creek, January 2005.

The old skiff was frozen in the ice when Tisbury Great Pond ran over its banks. This photograph was taken just before sunset on a bitterly cold January afternoon resulting in the counterplay of the icy blue shadows with the red-gold radiance of the setting sun.

2: "Old Skiff at Quansoo - Fall" Quansoo (Chilmark) Tisbury Great Pond at Crab Creek, December 2004

The old skiff had sat aground here for years, its paint weathered to a crazed and mottled texture that appeared more lichen-like than man-made. As Tisbury Great Pond overflowed its banks in late fall, the skiff (almost) floated free once again.

Mallard at Sunset LakeMallard on the Banks of Sunset Lake

3. "Mallard on the Banks of Sunset Lake" Sunset Lake (Oak Bluffs), 2008

A flock of ducks were enjoying the early spring sunshine on the banks of Sunset Lake, overlooking the Harbor in Oak Bluffs. This fellow came up out of the water and had a closer look at the photographer. What seemed a very ordinary image of a very ordinary duck suddenly lit up as he came into close focus in the brilliant sunshine. Water droplets gleamed like gems along his face and breast and the intricate patterns of individual white barbules splayed over iridiscent violet wing bars were both beautiful and humbling in their inimitably subtle and complex design. Even the wrinkly ribs of his comical orange legs are worthy of a second look.

Fording the CutFording the Cut

6: "Fording the Cut" Hancock Beach (Chilmark), 2006.

Sitting alone on Hancock Beach in a pea soup fog, these riders seemed to materialize out of the mists. The lead rider (bareback, at right) drove her horse down the steep, crumbling sand banks cut by Chilmark Pond as it poured out with the tide. The others followed and all four forded the fast-running waters, climbed the far bank, and vanished in the fog. The whole encounter was perhaps a minute and as I sat in the veltvet stilness of the fog, I wondered if I had seen them at all or whether these were the spirits of the place.

8: "Heron Fishing Parsonage Pond" West Tisbury, 2010.

This Great Blue Heron had stood stock still in the deepening dusk along the edge of Parsonage Pond (also known as Whiting's Pond - it's the one right around the corner from Alley's) until his prey was within striking distance. Then strike he did; so fast I almost missed it. His feathers, ghostly blue-grey in the soft light, were mirrored in the still waters.

Ice Moon, Tisbury Great PondIce Moon, Tisbury Great Pond

9: "Ice Moon - Tisbury Great Pond" Quansoo (Chilmark), 2009.

This spectacular full moon rose over the hard frozen waters of Tisbury Great Pond on a frigid February evening. The sky was clear but the moon was so bringht that Mars (left of center) was the only other object visible in the sky. The waxy orange swath of moonlight on the ice looked so utterly different from the usual broad sparkles of white on the unfrozen waters that the scene felt other-worldly.

Luminescent Surf IILuminescent Surf II

17: "Luminescent Surf II" Lucy Vincent Beach (Chilmark), 2008.

This natural light night shot was taken on an inky-black moonless night. At first, I could barely see the strange flashes of light that had attracted me to the dark shore. As my eyes adjusted I realized that what I was seeing was the light of lumiscent diatoms as they flashed in the turbulence of the breaking surf. In this full-open (f/2.8, ISO 3200) 30 second exposure, the bright blue waves are localized by their own flash: the diatoms luminesce only when disturbed so the surf break creates a fulgurant flash. What looks like mist in the foreground is actually the long-exposure averaging of the gently lit wash of the surf up and down the beach. This subtle glow was all that lit the boulders at the foot of the image. This was an absolutely other-worldly scene which captivated me for hours and didn't end until I was nearly washed off the beach by a large wave I didn't spot in the dark.

Aquinnah by SeaAquinnah by Sea

29: "Aquinnah by Sea" Aquinnah, 2009.

This ultrapanoramic view of the entire western headlands of Martha's Vineyard encompasses miles of coastline, including Gay Head Light and the Cliffs of Aquinnah. This work combines HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography with Ultra High Definition to produce an image of extraordinary depth and detail. Unfortunately this cannot be conveyed by existing Web technologies.

If this image were displayed on maximum resolution HDTVs it would require a stack 5 TVs tall and 25 wide, 125 in all, and even then they could not reproduce the fine gradations in tone and color of the ogriginal.

The intent though, is not tecnological specsmanship but rather than to create an image that can be visually experienced much the way one would peruse the original scene. Stepping back (at its native resolution the image is 16 feet wide) you can take in the whole of this spectacular coastline with its erratic shore of coves and points, its wild chromatic cliffs, and the beacon of Gay Head Light beaming out some 25 stories above the water. Stepping in closer you discover smaller features, nooks and coves and patterning in the cliffs. And stepping in closer still you might find someone sitting on a rock, a couple holding hands, shore birds standing on the rocks, and maybe even an unsuspecting skinny-dipper.

Availability:    24" x 192" (Edition of 10)

Note: Because of the scale (the framed image is 3 feet tall and 18 feet wide) and the limited edition, each print will be custom produced framed, and installed.
